BARK: Exfoliating bark with strips in orange-brown when young and grey when mature.

FOLIAGE: Excellent foliage characteristics. Smaller medium to dark green leaves turns shades of yellow in fall. 

BARK: Smooth greenish brown when young. Mature bark exfoliates in large thin sheets becoming gray brown in color.

FLOWERS: Greenish-yellow blooms in late spring after leaf expansion.

BARK: Matures to grayish brown with deep fissures, ridges and plates.

LANDSCAPE VALUE: Large shade tree. Good for naturalizing and remediation of wetland areas.

GROWTH HABIT: 65’-75’ high with a 25”spread. Symmetrical, oval pyramid shape. Large, deciduous, broadleaf tree. Slow to moderate growth rate. Prefers moist, deep, well-drained clay. 

FOLIAGE: Dark green that turn scarlet to purple in fall.  

BARK: Dark gray almost black with irregular ridges.

LANDSCAPE VALUE: Excellent specimen tree due to its vibrant fall color. Native shade tree that works well in urban settings like buffer strips, or median planting; tolerates urban air pollution.

 

Chinese Pistache

GROWTH HABIT: 25′-35′ high with a 25”spread. Rounded vase-like shape. Large deciduous, broadleaf, tree. Moderate growth rate. 

FOLIAGE: Dark green that turn shades of orange and red in fall.  

BARK: Gray- brown that peels to show red bark underneath.

LANDSCAPE VALUE: Excellent specimen, shade or street tree.  Pistache is a tough tree that is drought tolerant and will grow in all soil types.

GROWTH HABIT: 60′-100′ high with a 60′-80′ spread.  Large, deciduous, broadleaf tree. Upright to rounded crown; irregular outline; Slow to moderate growth. Full sun to partial shade.

FOLIAGE: Green in summer turns purple-red in fall which lasts for a long period. 

BARK: Light gray  

LANDSCAPE VALUE: Durable and long-lived tree. A majestic tree for a large area. One of the most handsome of all oaks.

 

Overcup Oak

HARDINESS: Zone 6-9

GROWTH HABIT: 30’-40’ high with a 30′-40′ spread. Oval and rounded at maturity with uniform branching. Moderate to fast growth rate. Tolerates full sun to partial shade.

FOLIAGE: Dark green leaves turn copper brown in fall.

BARK: Rough and grayish-brown, with irregular ridges.

LANDSCAPE VALUE: Fast growing oak that is adaptable to different growing conditions. Needs large space for root system and crown development.

 

Nuttall Oak

HARDINESS: Zone 6-8

GROWTH HABIT: 60′ -80′ high with a 35′-50′ spread.  Large deciduous, broadleaf tree. Moderate growth rate.

FOLIAGE: Dark green in summer turns orange-red to scarlet in fall.  

BARK: Gray-brown bark is divided into ridged plates. 

LANDSCAPE VALUE: Nuttall Oak is an alternative to Pin Oak. Moderately tolerant of different soil types.

GROWTH HABIT: 60′-75′ high with a 40′-50′ spread.  Broad and  rounded crown at maturity. Medium  to fast growth rate. 

FOLIAGE: Medium green in summer; turns yellow to russet red in fall.  

BARK: Grey brown. 

LANDSCAPE VALUE: Best  for an all-around oak. Excellent for large area use due to its overall form and texture. Easily transplants and adapts to most habitats.

GROWTH HABIT: 55′-80′ high with 50′-60′ spread.  Narrow and rounded in maturity.

FOLIAGE: Dark green in summer turning a russet-red in fall.

BARK: Light gray, very smooth; darkens and develops ridges with maturity.

LANDSCAPE VALUE: Excellent street or for use in parking lots, buffer strips or lawn trees. Very adaptable to urban stress.

FOLIAGE: Dark green, glossy, leathery leaves turning light maroon to bright red in Fall.

FLOWERS: Dark pink blooms late July to mid September.

BARK: Exfoliating bark of older branches; light medium gray-brown coloration.

LANDSCAPE VALUE: It’s resistance to mildew makes it adaptable to many different areas. Its shape makes great for new development. 

Tonto Crape Myrtle (Deep pink-red)
